A citizen has notified the Arapahoe County Sheriff’s Office that they received a scam phone call. While the scammer provided a phone number with a 347 area code, the caller ID indicated that call was coming from 303-795-4711, which is the non-emergency dispatch phone number for the Arapahoe County Sheriff’s Office.
In this case, the scammer told the person that they had an “open case” and that they needed to call the phone number they provided to talk to an officer. The scammer even provided a fake case number.
The Arapahoe County Sheriff’s Office wants to remind the community that numbers on caller ID can be faked and should not be presumed to be an accurate representation of the caller.
These types of scams, which often manipulate caller ID to mimic a local law enforcement agency, generally involve the scammer telling the victim that they have an outstanding warrant, have missed jury duty or committed some other infraction and that they have to pay a fine. They try to convince people to make the payment using a moneygram or prepaid credit card.
The Arapahoe County Sheriff’s Office recommends not speaking with these types of callers. Never give financial or other personal information to these callers. This includes your full name, date of birth, Social Security number, credit card numbers or bank account information.
