Arapahoe County celebrates forever families on November 4
The Human Services department would like to share its enthusiasm and excitement regarding the observance of National Adoption Month this November. This is an important time of year when our staff celebrates the families who have finalized adoptions this year.
On November 4, Human Services is partnering with the Arapahoe County District Court to honor this year’s adoptive families and finalize adoption hearings for foster and kin families at the courthouse. So far this year, 41 adoptions have been finalized between Jan.-Oct. We are expecting 10-15 adoptions to be finalized on National Adoption Day. In 2021, 85 children and youth were adopted in Arapahoe County.
“Adoption day at the courthouse holds some of my favorite memories working in the county because we get to see the smiling faces and happy tears all morning,” said Dawn Klaus, adoption supervisor at Human Services. “Our foster families have opened up their hearts and homes to some of our most vulnerable kiddos and we are truly blessed to have such wonderful forever families come out of Arapahoe County.”
There are more than 117,000 children and youth across the country who are in foster care waiting for a forever family. These are children who have experienced some level of trauma and were determined unsafe in their home. In Arapahoe County, although nearly 81% of children involved with child protection remained safely at home or in the home of their relatives or kin, 461 children were served in foster, group or congregate care.
This November, join Human Services as we help raise awareness about the importance of adoption and securing a permanent sense of belonging for teenagers who are at risk of aging out of foster care. Learn more about our Adoption Program.
