Kiowa Creek North Open Space Master Planning process is underway

County seeks community input on the future of the 265-acre property

Arapahoe County is seeking public feedback for a 265-acre property located just south of the Town of Bennett. The Kiowa Creek North site was purchased by the County in 2009, specifically for passive use recreation. It’s currently undergoing a master planning process that will provide an extensive trail system, educational opportunities focused on preservation and restoration of ecological habitats, and a neighborhood trail connection to surrounding communities. The overarching goal is to protect and maintain a minimal and passive approach to any improvements to the Kiowa Creek riparian corridor.

Outreach started this summer and continues with an online survey that will be open through Nov. 30. The preliminary concept was developed via direct interaction with the community during Bennett Days, and through coordination with Arapahoe County Open Spaces staff. The goal of the survey is to gather more public commentary on these plans, which preserve numerous high-quality ecological habitats found throughout the corridor, while providing both recreational and extensive educational opportunities with minimal impact to the site. Previous and current uses include small amounts of livestock grazing and row-crop farming. Extensive wildlife activity has been observed throughout the entire site, and there are distinct native plantings found only in this specific part of Colorado.

“We look forward to working with the surrounding community to create, preserve and protect this remarkable project site,” said Shannon Carter, director of Arapahoe County Open Spaces. “Preservation and protection of this unique location with its high-quality eastern riparian floodplain, its natural resources and extensive wildlife is critical.”

The Kiowa Creek North site is expected to be open to the public in 2024 and will provide a variety of outdoor recreational opportunities along with appropriate amenities. Future additions will include:

  • A multi-use looped trail system for year-round use (hiking, biking, snowshoeing, cross country skiing, equestrian, etc.)
  • Wildlife & fauna viewing areas
  • Exceptional educational opportunities and outdoor classrooms
  • Trail connection to the Antelope Hills neighborhood
  • A future livestock grazing area
  • Various equestrian uses

The conditions and restrictions of Kiowa Creek’s funding dictate that there will be no active recreation on the site such as ballfields or playgrounds. For more information, visit www.kiowacreekopenspace.com.
