Arapahoe County offering rental assistance to those affected by COVID


With the recent news that only about 11% of federally approved COVID-19 rental assistance has been distributed to those who need it most—a number that’s even lower in Colorado—it’s a good time to remind everyone that Arapahoe County’s rental assistance offerings are still in full swing.

The County’s program provides short-term help to keep struggling individuals and families in their homes. Because of COVID-19 shutdowns and job losses or shifts, paying rent has become a challenge for many during the pandemic. This program helps alleviate short-term financial stress around housing needs so that families can focus more closely on providing basic and critical needs such as food, daycare and medical. Funding for this program is limited, but to date the County has distributed about 35% of its allocated amount since February. The County received a second round of federal funds in July, and we are encouraging anyone who thinks they might qualify to check their eligibility by visiting our Rent Assistance page.


Those who have a COVID-related loss of income and whose income is less than 80 percent of the area median income (AMI) may be eligible for this program. Those with income less than 50% AMI will be given first priority. For example, a household of four at 50% AMI makes less than $50,000 in annual gross income. Experienced and knowledgeable program staff members (including bilingual staffers) are available to walk applicants through the process and work with them to secure the proper documentation. Among the other eligibility requirements:

  • Arapahoe County Resident 
  • Legally present in the United States
  • Meet income qualifications for the grant that will be providing assistance
  • Provide proof of all who live in a household (for children: listed on the lease, school enrollment forms, etc.)
  • Provide proof of income for all adults in the household, as well as for any minors who may be receiving income. This can include Supplemental Security Income (SSI), pay stubs, Social Security award letters, proof of child support and any other income.
  • A copy of current signed lease
  • An eviction notice (if the applicant is being evicted for non-payment)
  • IDs for adults in the household (driver’s license or Colorado ID card)
  • Landlord contact information
  • Proof of COVID-19-related loss of income
