Welcome to The County Line

The County Line newsletter logo

In the spirit of embracing a new year—and a new decade—the Arapahoe County Board of Commissioners is pleased to introduce The County Line. This monthly newsletter will provide updates from all five commissioners about the work we do in the community, a calendar of upcoming events, and news items from around the County that affect your daily lives. We’ll also use future issues of the newsletter to answer questions you have about counties’ duties in general and the roles we play in formulating and executing public policy.

It’s safe to say that 2020 will be a busy year for all of us. The County will oversee three elections. We will conduct the decennial census as part of a nationwide effort to count our residents. The commissioners will continue to address ongoing issues such as homelessness, transportation, public safety, and oil and gas regulations, among others. (Read through this edition of The County Line to see updates about some of these items.)

As always, Arapahoe County’s efforts will be informed by our fiscal commitments and realities. The defeat this past November of Measure 1A—a proposed property tax increase that would have funded a much-needed new county jail and associated programs—means that the need to replace our aging facility still remains. Given the County’s limited financial resources, the Board will have to make difficult choices about certain programs and priorities in the year ahead.

We invite you to track our work around these issues by attending one of our many public meetings, especially our Conversations with a Commissioner gatherings and our Telephone Town Halls, and by following our updates in The County Line or on our digital platforms.

The Board is excited to begin working on the many challenges and opportunities we face in 2020. We encourage you reach out to us with any questions or concerns you have about any issue. Together we can ensure that Arapahoe County continues to be the home that we all know and love.
