[ARCHIVED] Felony Menacing and Pursuit Precede Officer-Involved Shooting

NEWS lettering

A suspect was shot after leading deputies on a pursuit when he fled from the scene of a reported physical domestic violence incident in the 6700 block of S. Potomac Street.

The first deputy arriving at the incident learned that a third person was involved and had menaced another person with a gun. That suspect was then seen fleeing the area in a vehicle. Deputies pursued the vehicle west bound on Arapahoe Road, until they were able to box the vehicle in and get it stopped at the intersection with S. Dayton Street.

Deputies ordered the driver, the only occupant, out of the vehicle. The suspect refused to comply with these lawful orders. Deputies attempted to break the driver’s window of the vehicle to remove the driver, but the driver reached for his gun. Deputies fired at and struck the suspect. Deputies immediately removed him from the vehicle and began CPR once he was deemed to no longer be a threat. The suspect, an adult male, was transported to an area hospital in an unknown condition. A loaded gun was recovered from the suspect’s vehicle. The suspect was later pronounced deceased at the hospital.

Investigators with the Arapahoe County Sheriff’s Office will be piecing together the details of the original call and our response. The 18th Judicial District Critical Response Team (CRT) has been activated to investigate the details of the officer-involved shooting portion of this case. Information about the Critical Response Team can be found on our website.

Until the CRT completes its investigation, there is no information available regarding shooting. The names of the deputies involved are not being released at this time. Per Sheriff’s Office policy, three deputies involved in the incident have been placed on paid administrative leave. Two of the deputies have been with the agency for more than 10 years, one deputy has been with the agency for three years.

There is a substantial amount of investigation left to do. No additional information is expected to be released by the Sheriff’s Office until the investigation has concluded. The name of the suspect will be released by the Arapahoe County Coroner’s Office after appropriate notifications have been.
