History of the ACSO

Arapahoe County was established in August 25,1855 as part of the Kansas Territory, when Governor Daniel Woodson signed an act of territorial legislation..

The Arapahoe County Sheriff's Office was founded in September of 1858 with the appointment of the first sheriff E.W. Wynkoop.

Today, the Arapahoe County Sheriff’s Office is comprised of 750 dedicated and professional employees who provide law enforcement services to a population of 644,000 people over nearly 900 square miles.

As for law and order then, there wasn’t much. The residents of Arapahoe County tried their scoundrels and meted out the discipline, which usually meant banishment or a ‘good ol’ hanging’ without appeal. Men settled their disputes with six-guns. Reports from that time period indicate there were about four to five gunfights a day. Dueling was also practiced during those early times.
