STRASBURG – On October 3, 2019 at approximately 10:48 a.m., the ACSO received a 911 call from a victim who reported his car had been stolen from outside a liquor store at 1497 Main St. in Strasburg. The victim reported that a man approached him with a gun and demanded his wallet and car keys and the victim complied with the demand. The suspect took the car and fled the area.
Approximately 12 minutes later, a responding deputy saw the victim’s stolen car heading westbound on I-70. The deputy was able to catch up to the car and attempted to stop the car but the suspect did not pull over. The deputy began pursuing the suspect with the assistance of other deputies and the Colorado State Patrol. The pursuit continued westbound on I-70 and reached speeds in excess of 100 miles per hour. As traffic congestion increased, the suspect’s speed slowed to approximately 25 miles per hour and eventually, deputies stopped the car in the area of I-70 and Washington.
Deputies made repeated commands for the suspect to get out of the car but he refused. Denver Police officers arrived on scene and assisted in attempting to get the suspect to comply with orders. During these attempts to gain compliance, the suspect shot himself. Deputies and officers on scene began life saving efforts and the suspect was transported to an area hospital where he was pronounced dead.
The Arapahoe County Sheriff’s Office is investigating the initial incident in Strasburg and the Denver Police Department is investigating the events that occurred after the pursuit ended. This is an on-going investigation and interviews are continuing.
